The movie begins when Robert is away with his company for business in an unknown foreign country his wife Kathryn is bored with him and she wants to have affairs even though she is married. She must be with child because later on in the film you learn why it is in her interest to have an affair even though she has a baby at home. Kathryn’s friend, Darcy (Diane Lane) who also happens to be Darcy Parker (Robert De Niro) wife and has an affair with him, this gives Kathryn the reason she wants to end her marriage. She asks Robert to give her a divorce and he agrees because he is still hoping that his wife will give him another chance. Robert goes back home and meets Darcy and they get friendly. Eventually Darcy invites Robert over to her house where she reveals that she is pregnant with his child. She tells him that she needs to end their affair because she has decided to have an abortion which he agrees with. On the day the abortion is about to take place Darcy shows up with a "young man" who she introduces as her brother, where he proceeds with the illegal abortion and makes it harder for Robert and Darcy by doing this. Robert ends up getting his housekeeper Marie (Thierry Lhermitte) to take Darcy and her "brother" to a hotel and then they leave. This ends his second chance at happiness and becomes frustrated and angry at Kathryn for not keeping her word on keeping their marriage together, even though he still loves her so much. Robert then moves on to being with Darcy, even though he is now married to Kathryn, she becomes pregnant with his child. Darcy tries to get rid of this pregnancy but her friend tells the truth about how the baby is not Robert’s, even though she has an affair with Robert. This makes Kathryn sick and she gets drunk one night thinking it's no longer important to be with someone who does not care for her anymore. Later that night Robert comes back home and finds Kathryn passed out in their bed after having another one too many drinks.
